The 70 members and guests who attended AICC’s “Distilling the Digital Print Market” symposium, June 16-17, in Louisville, heard from independent market experts, digital press manufacturers, and digital technology users. The speakers from these distinct viewpoints told a story of a technology which is rapidly growing and whose application is expanding traditional packaging markets.

In the latest NAM Manufacturers’ Outlook Survey, which was released in conjunction with a listening session at the White House with President Donald Trump, 93.3 percent of manufacturers are either somewhat or very positive about their own company’s outlook, up from 56.6 percent one year ago and 77.8 percent in December. That represents a new all-time high in the survey’s 20-year history. As a result, the NAM Manufacturers’ Outlook Index also soared to a new high, up from 53.3 in December to 63.7 in this report. It was the second straight quarter where the outlook exceeded its historical average, which would equate to 50 in the index, and there were strong gains in confidence for all firm sizes.

The Institute for Supply Management’s Manufacturing Purchasing Managers’ Index continued to grow rather strongly, accelerating to its fastest pace since November 2014. The composite index rose from 54.5 in December to 56.0 in January, marking the fifth straight monthly expansion in the headline number. New orders and production grew strongly in January.

See the impact of crush on board performance, corrugated board samples were created by laminating a bottom liner to C flute singleface web samples taken from the corrugator.
 
Corrugated board is an immensely popular packaging material because it is recyclable and it has a high strength to weight ratio. Because there is such a strong relationship between crush and board quality, caliper is the most common quality measurement on the corrugator.

A record number of AICC members have already renewed their AICC membership. Nearly 150 companies, more and 1/3rd of the US membership, have renewed within 30 days of the initial notice being sent out.

Attendees worldwide from the converting industry attended SuperCorrExpo 2012 in Atlanta living up to its billing as the largest corrugated machinery show in the Western Hemisphere. Over 300 exhibitors of the leading industry suppliers used the show as a launching ground for their latest innovations and newest products and technologies.
 
Greif and AICC have signed a set aside agreement in which Greif pledges 200,000 tons per year to the independent market over the next two years.
 
AICC Mexico hosted its 11th annual meeting May 16-18, 2012 in Mexico City. The three day meeting drew more than 150 independent corrugated boxmakers and industry suppliers from all around Mexico, the US, Canada, Spain, Germany, Chile and Brazil.

AICC members head to China for a study trip and come home with more than they expected.
 
Starting in April of this year AICC began actively recruiting and accepting members from the folding carton and rigid box sectors of the paperboard industry. The key factor is that the new members be privately-held, independent companies. Equipment and consumable suppliers to this market segment are also being added.
 
For the 6th year AICC participated in this show which typically attracts over 1000 attendees from Walmart's Buyers and Vendors looking for Sustainable Packaging Solutions.
 
Arden Software, Park City, UT was awarded the 2011 AICC, Board Converting News & Corrugated Today Innovator of the Year Award at AICC’s Annual Meeting held recently in Salt Lake City, UT.
 
Jim Haglund, President of Central Container Corp., Minneapolis, and AICC Overseas Director, delivered a keynote presentation to the 39th annual conference of the Federation of Indian Corrugated Box Manufacturers (FCBM), held December 10-12, 2010, in Hyderabad, India, and which attracted more than 1,000 delegates from all around India, Southeast Asia, the Middle East and Europe. Haglund and AICC President Steve Young were invited to participate in the Conference representing the independent sector in North America.
 
The Board of Directors of the Association of Independent Corrugated Converters (AICC), has announced its lineup of standing committees and committee chairmen for the 2010-2011 membership year. AICC’s committees function within the Association’s five main operational areas: Executive, Education, Membership, Conventions and Industry Relations.
 
Numbered Packages were labeled with a single rectangular certificate that included the Package Number, a minimum Burst or ECT value, and the Box Manufacturer’s Name, City, and State. Beginning on January 9, 2010, Numbered Packages must have two rectangular certificates.

Participants in AICC’s Second Corrugated Industry Study Tour to China came back with a new perspective on the Chinese economy and a better understanding of the dynamic containerboard and corrugated packaging markets. The 10 day tour departed Los Angeles on Friday, March 23, and returned on Sunday, April 1. In all, 29 AICC members participated in the trip along with five tour staff members.
 
The demand for bright consumer oriented graphics printed directly on corrugated board creates a challenge to the graphic designer. An awareness and realization is needed to establish that good creative design is achievable only in direct relationship to your knowledge of the corrugated printing medium and the corrugated printing process.
 
Holding people accountable comes up often during our AICC CEO Advisory Group meetings. This is one of the most important functions of senior executives and at the same time one of their greatest challenges.

Designers must understand both the graphic and structural ends of design, as well as have good working knowledge of pre-press, production, and sales. As we all know, the entire sheet plant team makes that happen. From the designers position alone though, understanding all of the requirements and limitations of the equipment, such as printing plates and cutting dies, at both your own and your suppliers plant is priceless.
